    99 Corolla work in progress

Just a thread I'm starting with pics of my car, I'll update it with everything I do to it.

Here's a picture the day I got it:

Chillin' at the beach with my new clear corners:

I ditched the hubcaps, disabled the DRLs and painted the logo up front black:

This was not a good day:

First time I drove in the snow:

Took it all apart just to see if I could put it back together:

Changed all the lights on the inside:

My new gauges during the day:

    And at night:

More to come soon, let me know what you think.

LOL yeah I like doing that... I've always loved seeing how things are built. But I also changed the shifter light while I was at it. If you look at the picture you can see the bulb sticking out :)

Ok this is kinda funny, but my mods to all the lights in my car were 100% free. How you ask? This:

Well on my screen it looks a little on the light red side, but in person it's a really deep red.

Did you sharpie the inside or the outside. I think it would look clean if you did it on the inside, but if you did it on the outside it may look bad because you would be able to see if you got some red on the black plastic. I guess with this method you could use any color you want. Sounds sweet

I took apart everything to get to the actual light bulb, that is what I colored, the actual bulb. :)

So when the lights are off, it looks completely stock.

How long has it been since you painted the bulbs? Has the ink on the bulb dimmed at all from the heat or are they not hot enough to affect the sharpie ink?

Yeah, I used to color bulbs with sharpies years ago HAHA... but it does not last at all... so you'll probably be taking it all back apart lol... and not just to see if you can put it back together!

Have you considered a 8.5 gen front end swap????

What about putting it on the inside of the plastic. dont know how it would look but i bet it would last a bit longer since its not directly on the bulb.

Well I did the clock about a year ago, still looks great, and the gauges don't count, since it's red on it's own, but the knobs and the shifter light are all relatively new, so we'll see :)

Yes I have, and it's on the to-do list, but not any time soon. But someday I'll be rollin with that front end.

I don't know how that would look either, but I'm not too worried, since it is easy to do it the way I did. lol. Plus I saved money by not buying all those led's that are out there. You could try it out on your car though :)

Yeah, coloring the plastic would work a lot better...

I'm glad to see a new front end in your future :D

In this picture you have 1 broken stud. what happened? ran into another curb with the donut and break another one or something?

I got a flat on the freeway, was almost gonna be late for work, so I was in a hurry. Well, one exit later, I get off the freeway, hit a pothole. FAIL. It dents the donut rim, as you can see in the last pic. So I drive it all slow the last 1/2 mile to work, and figure I'll worry about it once I get off work. My buddy let's me borrow his full size spare from his car, SCORE. Well it turns out I was in way too much of a hurry to put the donut on, apparently I cross-threaded a lug nut. FAIL #2. So I take that picture, knowing I'll share this story someday... I take two other lug nuts off, get going on the last one, what do you know, cross-threaded. FAIL #3. Had to break the studs to get the spare off, so I got a ride to Kragen, and got all new ones just in case the other ones were compromised in any way. Luckily they're relatively easy to change, just took off the brakes to get to it, as you can see in the fourth picture in the original post in this thread. If you look, there are two of them broken off. So in the end, I had two flat tires within 9 minutes of each other, one bent rim, two broken studs, one new tire, four new studs, and four new lug nuts.
